Shifra is a fine artist concerned with the spontaneous world that surrounds us all but few perceive. Her high-velocity photographs in color and, more recently, black & white are enrobed in a wide array of atmospheric digital after effects, perfected to create an unfurling retinal sensation in the viewer. We see light refracting light as harmony and transition in the midst of an urban landscape are reduced to glittering abstraction. Serving as a type of virtual anamnesis, each photo, or “Faded Memory,” creates a snapshot of culture that evokes a recollection at once highly specific and general. A roving artist whose work features a deceptively homogenous albeit geographically diverse terrain, Shifra captures the fast-paced play of light and shadow against urban architecture, human figures and the colossal structures of the natural and artificial world.

Born in Israel, Shifra first exhibited her work, then intimate drawings in ink, in 1977. She has a Masters in Art History and recently published a book of her photography entitled "The Third Eye is My Inner Eye."

…I am a realistic perfectionist, but at the same time I am also a poet who believes in magic! Lydia van den Berg

My name is Lydia van den Berg. I am an artist. My personal biography has been up until now a very dynamic and intensive one. My nomadic life style allows me to travel without routes. I am free without any examples or schedule; I feel something magical within which allows me to be open for new adventures without any boundaries. It is a feeling that takes me to the edges of the gigantic ocean. My art is a pure reflection of my persona.

I have always created art, all through my life. In fact it is difficult for me not to be creative during the day. I always imagined that once I had a family with children, everything would normalize, but this is not the case. I see so many interesting and exciting things and art is the only medium in which I can truly express my thoughts and views.

Just do it! It has become my motto.
For the first time in my life I believe in myself and feel that I have become a professional artist. It is a new and once in a life time experience combined with a lot of learning.
For years I searched for my "Me" and my personality. I experimented for a long time with abstract art-, and familiarized myself with various techniques such as oil on canvas, papier-maché, encaustics, watercolors and acrylics on paper, even working for a while in a goldsmith’s studio.
My development and constant search for that "Something" has brought me to where I am now. Developing my "Magical-Poetic-Realism" style has been a long journey, reflecting my own personal journey. I began to develop it in the early 90’s but only identified myself through it in 2003.
When I was pregnant with my first child I wanted to decorate the children's room with child-friendly art. Yet after a long search I still had not found anything appropriate. My husband laughed and said, “Why don’t you paint something yourself?” I did and I am thankful.
Today "Magical-Poetic-Realism" has become my style, the trademark through which Lydia van den Berg can tell her story.
I can’t stop painting!
It is true! When I am in my studio working I say to myself: “When this project is completed, then I will have a break," but I can’t stop painting. I feel just happy when I touch the colors and enjoy the feeling of the brush smoothly gliding over the paper to leave a permanent colored image.
My life is intense and exciting and I feel that there is so much to tell.

We have great news! Although initial inclusion to Vivid Arts Network is granted by invitation only and by acceptance of an exhibition to any of our venues, this year we would also like to give artists the opportunity to experience working with our network and applying for membership.

Vivid Arts Network International membership applications are open. Vivid Arts welcomes the artists that meet the membership eligibility criteria to apply as a limited number of new artists will be admitted.

Award wining, international contemporary artist Lydia Parish, was born in California, USA in 1984. She studied Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations and Art History at the University of California Los Angeles. Parish has had group exhibitions in the USA, Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Germany and Egypt.

Her vibrant, colorful abstract works of rich texture- many very large scale canvases, belong in private collections in many countries. and have caused quite a stir among collectors. “The main theme of my work is the universe and the consciousness evolving in it, the loneliness going along with it and the hope that all is being seen and guided by a higher consciousness than ours.” Ton Boudewijn

Ton Boudewijn’s abstractions are a powerful and delicate balance between colorful dynamic forms, and thesensitive calm and softness of the brushstrokes. Boudewijn creates art of freedom and form with careful calibration of colors and elements with which to signal a particular sentiment or mood. The compositions create a movement of light and bright swirling colors, of exquisite beauty.

The dramatic use of circular forms in Ton Boudewijn’s paintings conveys a sense of movement within the composition of the work inviting the viewer into meditation. He strives in all his work to capture a meditative spirit that may reflect the fragility and magic he witnesses in the natural world.

Ton Boudewijn’s paintings are instructive, while simple, they produce a stunning image; a window into something deeper.

We are proud to present the Artist of the Week

We find Viktor Majdandzic's work to be compelling and captivating with a unique focus on structure and geology. With artworks that are naturally present and combine disparate narratives focused on geology, Viktor nevertheless shares a fascination and unique talent for forgotten modes of communication through structure that is left in the unfathomable depths of geological time.

"As an artist I feel respect for the unique identity and the bodily integrity of a work of art. As a finite entity it reflects the pertinacity of life embodied in a finite organism that is again embedded in nature, specifically in geology. Trying to ponder the ontology of life I recognized that patterns are the basic primitives of its structure. These patterns crystallize and dissolve, accumulate and interchange, replicate and recombine, stabilize and diversify, endure and dissolve, in touch with the warm breath of entropy. I began and kept on representing those patterns in my art with structures derived from three manners of sequencing squares. These structures, with and intrinsic logic and stabile dynamic, resemble crystals in geology. The flow and sprinkles of the paint, then, resemble the geological processes of erosion and sedimentation. Although the structures seem rational, their combination in a particular painting is intuitive. The flows and sprinkles of paint are powered by gravity and open-ended. The structures and process models have to submit to the laws of pictorial composition, creating the identity of a particular painting. Therefore I do not experience a painting as an expression of myself. Rather than expressing myself, I feel like an ascetic who is mumbling prayers of useless knowledge of the what and how of the world, bound to an identity that I consider a point instantiating eternity. After all, the soul of a painting, I believe, is beauty, which is also a direct expression of the conditions of liveliness, both of living organisms and of their environments."

Creativity is my motivator, what truly comes from the inside out, and the only thing that brings me satisfaction and happiness. My work contains the beauty and the admiration of the world. I follow, in my abstraction, the path of life and its elements. The texture, composition, and intense colors are the main elements of my paintings put onto paper, canvas, or a board. The figures are ambiguous, sometimes distorted to make abstraction, scattered all over the sea, the earth, the sky, the mountains, where they are seen and suddenly disappear, creating a play before our eyes. I use brush marks, light and heavy layers of paint, paper, gesso, oxide, or fabric, to create a hybrid art form in any composition. My goal and desires are to release emotions in my paintings where they become a language to communicate with the spectator, where each one provides a different interpretation but they still keep the universal meaning. Painting is my way of expression and my joy of living. My soul is left in every work of art which is inspired by the simplest things of life and the grandeur of the creation.

“To be an artist is to die a bit each day until death makes immortal." Art must be like a physical combat, a struggle for life. The representation is imperfect. The victory is contactable. A work of art may never end. It’s continuous and depending coincidence"

Why do we still know so little about Frans Frengen?

Has he a late start? Has he only invented his technique now?

I must answer:” NO!” As a 10-year old boy a connoisseur of art of Antwerp bought his first oil painting with the words: “Do continue, we going to hear more from you in the future.”

Without any doubt Frans Frengen had always kept word. Increasingly concerned about the world around him, he sought his own way. In all shapes and images he did. Often he recognized his style by many others used.

He studied famous artists and their work. So he searched further. He attended classes at the “Famous Artists School” of New York by Al Parker, Norman Rockwell and many others, because his parents wanted him to learn another profession.

But by frans Frengen it was his nature, more as a passion. Art was his life. He studied at the academy a few years later - with much success though.

He also experimented in many areas. And finally he found his “Fumagine” (1978). This technique, he would never show (scramble) it to the world before he was master of this technique and he could work all the way about... Although it was extremely difficult because he could easily paint all he wanted ... He received offers, also from the Ministry. He shrugged off everything. He would leave it to others. (In “that” time earlier artists said: You are a young artist even when you were 50. So plenty of time.

He spent over 10 years to learn about his “ fumagine” and when his mother was dying (1987)

He promised to stay out of media if she could live longer. Does this help?

When she died in 1996, Frans Frengen still worked constantly to improve his style. And he devoted himself more than ever to his disciples.

Gradually his works were discovered ... after his short time as director. He began to appear in media. It was already 2005. Now art lovers and collectors begin to appreciate his unique style ...After in magazines and newspapers it’s all honesty. It’s contemporary.

Everybody is charmed and interested in this fascinating work of art.

Frans Frengen his whole life was art. As a little boy of 10 he made his first paintings on canvas. Ultimately it may be that involuntary arson he caused at his young age – he was nearly five – has been the influence of this last painting technique.

For several years Frans Frengen has been trying to control fire as such, so that it obvious and may be used in a figurative and even abstract way when creating his artwork. He studied soot and he knows it will reach eternity.

During his student years at the academy Frengen was already successful. The name fumagine to describe his extremely rare and unique technique is introduced by him in the world of art. Already lying below the horizontal - I call it here - canvas is an extremely difficult technique; often wrongly called as ink washes or charcoal; is amazing. The installation of smoke and soot in a subtle but controlled way gives the structure of a light and volatility atmosphere of inaccessibility. The soot of a flame has created characters that are of an attractive and fascinating beauty. By the smoky matter the ambiguity only become stronger. Frans Frengen is a “painter” of our time. This is evidence not only by his technique but also in front of the chosen topics which are sometimes critical sometimes cynical but today’s messages. It created images on the retina despite a great knowledge of drawing. Frans frengen has a professional rain of capacity. The enscenery or staging of his images makes us think we live a concept. Sometimes it could be an installation. Whatever, the current restructuring and floated squares usually in an empty quarter - which by one we can enter into discussion with the artist and which give them a egocentric and unique character and effect as if they are signatures - reinforce this image and identify the intent of the artist. The interest increases even more when you see how this work is created and how Frans Frengen is physically connected to his work. The potential power of his creation is to hunt you as in contemporary art.

Frans Frengen, a Belgian artist, has exhibited in many countries.

This work should be seen, visited and recruited only because the singularity and the confidential power. The intensity for the future is so immense. The next big commitment to the wonderful knowledge and skill of Frans Frengen is fascinating ...

Frans Frengen was born December 22, 1948. He currently lives works in Wemmel Belgium, near
Brussels. Receiving many awards his unique style is fumagine. It is to paint with a flame.
He is also a sculptor and cartoonist. He was a teacher. It's why children deserve such a big place in his art.

Frans Frengen paints in his unique fumagine style. A technique he introduced in art. With the soot from a flame (the most of a candle) he is raising his visions on canvas. With the soot and smoke he creates a fascinating world of monochrome shades that connect to sophisticated painting drawings, which you might mistakenly believe that they are made with charcoal or pencil. It’s not the easiest method, but a very fascinating process that leads to surprising beauty. Frans Frengen creates a new world in which the lightness of the figures on the canvas slumbers playful, endearing by their beauty. Their sometimes provocative poses are attractive but unattainable by their volatility, caught as they are in their smoky matter.

But there is more going on than playfulness. Under the thin soot lies a hidden reality. Seldom are the images free. From their apparent candor they grab our attention and care they reveal a rawer reality that gets us into unconscious depths. Beauty can be loneliness, sadness, detachment, violence. None of these topics are taboo for the work of Frans Frengen, but they are masters packed into the innocent game of seven errors, between the beauty of the image and the harsh of reality.

For the first time Frans Frengen shows a series of photos released from the realization of his work. The image of the romantic artist who almost lives the ecstatic creation of his artwork has exploded as a punctured balloon. In very uncomfortable positions, caught between the skeleton of a complex structure for the editing canvases horizontally and above the head of the artist we see frans frengen, with a candle in hand, the smoke on the screen to set up while the hot was dripping on his chest.

After a 21 year hiatus from painting, Israeli-born artist Elisha Ben-Yitzhak is back at his easel. For the past two decades, he has been building his business, Heavenly International Tours, and has had little time for such pleasures of soul. But at age 63, the Israeli-born Glendale resident is now back with an artistic vengeance, brush in hand.
After returning from a tour last November, he again got the urge to start painting. In February, Ben-Yitzhak subsequently participated in an exhibition and the Eisner Museum in Milwaukee. Spurred by that success, he then continued preparing for his current show, “Emotions,” at Donnybrook Fair in Whitefish Bay. This frenzy of brush strokes was nothing new. Earlier his career, Ben-Yitzhak’s paintings had been shown in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Great Britain, Switzerland, Spain, Israel, and the United States.

A “sabra,” a native Israeli, Ben-Yitzhak was born in Kibbutz Kfar Blum in Upper Galilee. His father, Asher, was a devoted music fan who emigrated to Palestine from Russia in 1936. His mother, Havah, emigrated there from Lithuania in 1934. “Since I was a youngster, painting and sculpting have been major parts of my life,” he says. He started painting after being injured in a military training exercise. Ben-Yitzhak studied art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and at the Avni Art Institute in Tel Aviv.

In the early 1970s, he worked for the Israeli ministry of tourism and was a spokesman for Jewish causes, during which time he was based in South Africa and in Milwaukee from 1980 to 1983. Around this time, he met a Milwaukee-based travel agent and the two discussed forming a tour company. Subsequently, Ben-Yitzhak moved permanently to Milwaukee. After 12 years in the tour world, he married Merle, his business partner; the two still run Heavenly International Tours.

On his latest trip to Israel this past March, he visited Art 107, a prestigious gallery on the trendy Ben Yehuda Street, to speak with the manager about considering an exhibition of his latest pieces. Establishing such connections are important, according to Ben-Yitzhak. “Don’t be shy,” he suggests as advice to other artists. “Approach galleries to see about doing shows. What good is it not to share your work?”

“Prior to living in Milwaukee, my whole life was art. It has been hard being away from it for so long,” Ben-Yitzhak says. “It’s burning inside of me, coming out, and now I can’t stop painting.”

All of Elisha Ben-Yitzhak’s works reflect personal experiences and symbols of life, he says, adding “My idea of painting is to find good composition. That’s the hardest part. I like to paint symbols and feelings.”

With newfound enthusiasm for his craft, Ben-Yitzhak doesn’t expect there will be another decades-long wait between art pieces. “I will now paint until I die,” he says. Written by Martin Hintz Source: M Magazine

Susan’s works are an intriguing mixed of photography, printmaking, painting and collage where layering and texture become the language by which the artist takes the viewer on a visual voyage. In her paintings, a sense of harmony is achieved in unexpected ways.
The poetry and melody of her compositions, reveal her extraordinary creativity and striking originality mixing several mediums to depict human and animal figures. She combines many modes through the act of collage, placing thin figures next to areas of abstract. The overlapping layers created through the accumulation of elements and her unique textural quality make for a rich variety of surfaces. Our eyes scuttle across the canvas as we find balance on the subtle details that emerge gradually from engaging images that lead us to a place of peaceful solitude.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"Ghost Horse" Mixed Media

"My current work mixes several mediums; photography, printmaking, painting and collage. I use oil litho inks and oil paint predominately, but in Ghost horse I also used encaustic and resin. Layering and texture are languages I constantly strive to speak, as I enjoy work that leads my eye on a visual voyage. Perhaps the single biggest influence on my perception, my eye came in the 90’s when I moved back to Colorado. My neighbor turned out to be Master Printer Craig O’brian. I became a studio fixture for several years. Craig had a different artist working each couple of days and after a few years the way I saw had permanently been transformed. Craig kept a “living Palette” of delicious litho inks much like a sour doe culture. At some point I knew which artist had been working by merely looking at the palette. Craig had worked with Rauschenberg and many other “greats” and encouraged me to experiment and to develop my own style. Today I still work with Craig, but also have my own press. Most of my paintings begin with an under-painting usually a solvent transfer on paper, which I then mount onto a board sub-straight. And then the painting begins.

The Evergreen State College was really my first exposure to counter culture, protests and freethinking. Evergreen was steeped Native American Heritage and Native Culture was very accessible. I studied Liberal Arts, Art History, two of my favorite passions Studio Art and Cultural Anthropology. Then I transferred to attend the San Francisco Art Institute where I studied Painting, Drawing, Art History and Film. I found it challenging to be in the city single parenting and finished up back at Evergreen. After graduating in1988 I explored the South West and discovered Sante Fe and the surrounding areas where I stayed for 5 years. Another major influence has been travel. I’m an adventure junky. I like cultural emersion and exploration. About 15 years ago my work grew into complex travel logs; explorations about tactile and ethereal experience of place. I use the art making process to integrate my experience. My work aims to inspire the human viewer through color, texture and iconic imagery."

LIGHT, ENERGY, PEACE . . . SOOTHING MEDITATION

Jim Pescott brings soothing visual meditations to the canvas. His unique pointillist journeys explore what is so often available to everyone but seldom visited in our daily frantic lifestyles. Dots fill Jim’s paintings with light, energy and love to bring the viewer precious opportunities to dwell peacefully within the image and allow calm to fill their spirit.

When Jim isn’t away painting somewhere he’s in his studio. Enter the room and everything you see echoes his creative focus: two studio easels, side-by-side with space between to allow for larger canvases, dominate the room. There’s a small table nearby where he mixes colours and keeps an assortment of brushes. And a larger table along a wall offers further creative opportunity. Much is revealed in this space about the energy and love Jim feels for his work.

“The ultimate creative experience for me is in nature where endless experiences keep me “in the moment” creatively - I see images to paint virtually everywhere. My studio has evolved to foster this same open gate into creativity.”

Against the easels leans a collection of unvarnished paintings: a canvas in process rests on each easel. An upholstered easy chair occupies a corner behind all this amidst walls filled with paintings. Books cover the floor beside the chair: some open, some with bookmarks and some simply waiting.

“I paint landscapes because this is what the earth seems to be about. I feel a deep connection with all of this: countryside or urban places all fit into what I paint because they are there and I have something to share about them.”

Jim paints from three sources: actual places “on site”, his photograph collection, and images in his thoughts. Because his paintings take from twenty to forty hours, when he paints “on location” it’s not possible to complete the work as light and other conditions change so Jim takes the canvas back to his studio to be finished. He’s never without a camera: Jim’s collection of concept material is vast and growing.

“Sometimes I have an image in my head that simply must be expressed. Sometimes too, a canvas started “on location” is more adventurously explored back in my studio as the image and I talk. ”

Fascinated with meditations on how colour communicates within the light and shadows of daily experiences, Jim endlessly explores the infinite journeys in rural and urban settings. His email studio newsletters share much about these experiences as he paints: words that share wonder and things that connect.

As far back as when he was three years old Jim knew he wanted to be a visual artist. As life brings assorted experiences from many sources he didn’t re-connect with his passion to paint for many years. Being a visual artist now fulfills his dreams and lifts his spirit robustly. Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year.
There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the American one: Many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making "resolutions." Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year.
The name "Rosh Hashanah" is not used in the Bible to discuss this holiday. The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Ha-Zikkaron (the day of remembrance) or Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar). The holiday is instituted in Leviticus 23:24-25.
The shofar is a ram's horn which is blown somewhat like a trumpet. One of the most important observances of this holiday is hearing the sounding of the shofar in the synagogue. A total of 100 notes are sounded each day. There are four different types of shofar notes: tekiah, a 3 second sustained note; shevarim, three 1-second notes rising in tone, teruah, a series of short, staccato notes extending over a period of about 3 seconds; and tekiah gedolah (literally, "big tekiah"), the final blast in a set, which lasts (I think) 10 seconds minimum. Click the shofar above to hear an approximation of the sound of Tekiah Shevarim-Teruah Tekiah. The Bible gives no specific reason for this practice. One that has been suggested is that the shofar's sound is a call to repentance. The shofar is not blown if the holiday falls on Shabbat.
Much of the day is spent in synagogue, where the regular daily liturgy is somewhat expanded. In fact, there is a special prayerbook called the machzor used for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur because of the extensive liturgical changes for these holidays.
Another popular observance during this holiday is eating apples dipped in honey, a symbol of our wish for a sweet new year.
The common greeting at this time is L'shanah tovah ("for a good year"). This is a shortening of "L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem" (or to women, "L'shanah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year."
